A New Revelation
You say you want a revelation, well, you know, we all want to change the words.
It came to me as in a reverie, a waking dream. Again the spirit appeared, that self-same sprite who came to me years ago, when he showed me two visions of wonders just beyond the horizon. In the first, I saw the image of a small blue bird, which was singing. And all the people went unto the bird, and they would tweet as doth the bird, to each and all and every one. The other vision was of a great book, and upon the book were many faces. All would be drawn unto it and look upon it, and each would write their name in it. And in the book was a high wall, and there the people would tell their secrets, and post images of their cats and dogs. And it was called the Book of Faces.
How now, spirit, said I, whither do ye wander? And he answered, I wander everywhere, swifter than the moones sphere. Come and see, he said, and beckoned me to follow. He led me to a high hill, and pointed out over the valley below. And the heavens opened, and I saw a throne, and around it were the four beasts of the elements; and they were Ronald McDonald, Hello Kitty, a G.I. Joe action figure, and Honey Boo-Boo. And from their midst came the Lamb of God, and carried with him seven seals. And I heard the voice of the Lord say, “By these signs shall ye know that the pox eclipse is nigh.”
And the Lamb opened the first seal, and I saw a new television reality series, and it was called “Hillbilly Handfishin’.” And I remembered something I’d once read, that our civilization had chosen machinery and medicine and happiness, and self-indulgence up to the very limits imposed by hygiene and economics.
And when the Lamb had opened the second seal, I beheld a pale horse, and a pale rider upon him. And the name of he who sat upon him was Clint Eastwood, and he spake to an empty chair that was there beside him, and great was the confusion among the multitudes.
And when he had opened the third seal, I saw a strange beast that was floating upon the air, and it was like unto a Fox, and it spewed lies and all sorts of filth from out of its mouth, and called it News. And it looked upon all that it had said and done, and pronounced it doubleplus goodthinkful.
And the Lamb opened the fourth seal, and I saw assembled all those who wore the masks of piety upon their sleeves, hypocrites, whoremongers, idolators, knuckle-draggers, bigots and posers all, oligarchs and men of great power, and even some women, whose hearts were of stone, and cried Lord, Lord, and knew naught of Him, and who had no care for their brethren, and were free of all conscience and remorse, and repented they neither of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their thefts. And each was fastened with bonds, and lowered screaming into the deepest pits of Hell. And it was called the Day of the Lowered. For it is better to sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian.
And when the Lamb had opened the fifth seal, I beheld a vast field of Monsanto BT corn, and lo, there was a great Roundup, and all that lived, died in the Roundup, save the corn. And when the people ate the corn it made holes in their bellies, and afflicted their children with asthma, allergies, and possibly autism. But it was all they had to eat, for they were forbidden from saving any other seed, and the honeybee was no more. And I thought, Oh brave new world, that hath such hubris in it. And I liked not the direction all this was going, but the specter held me with his glittering eye, and I could not leave.
And then the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and I heard a deafening thunder, and behold, it was the abomination of desolation spoken of in Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not to (let him that readeth understand). There before me was a dreadful and fearsome beast, with eyes all round, and with teeth and claws, and its metal feet trampled the earth, and its claws tore the tops off the mountains, and its teeth drilled into the earth, which gave forth a foul pestilence into the air and water. And the people were all made sickly, and they lamented their fate, and sent up a mighty cry to their government to help them, but the government had been put into the pocket of the beast, and so they heard not the cries of their people, and great was their tribulation. For we were made to suffer; it is our lot in life. And the beast destroyed a third of the earth, and a third of the waters, and all the air was filled with dust and ashes, as this rough beast, its hour come at last, slouched toward Bethlehem to be born.
And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And lo, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; and I heard the voice of the Lord again, saying, “Don’t go out tonight, well it’s bound to take your life; there’s a bad moon on the rise.” And I beheld a new beast rising up out of the earth, and he had many heads, and causeth the earth and all who dwell therein to worship the beast, and the image of the beast. And it spun a web that encircled all the earth, like unto spider. And power was given unto the beast over all nations and languages.
And the beast caused eyes to be placed everywhere, even in the heavens, and also ears, so that the eyes beheld all that a man did, and the ears heard all his words. And there were metal birds that brought down Hellfire from above, and they were grim, and their names were Reaper and Predator. And there were also more terrible weapons, with such heat as it were the sun come to earth. And the beast causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a barcode in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the barcode, or the name of the beast, or his image, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six, and his number is 4G LT, and his number is thirty gigabytes, and his number is a googolplex.
My fear grew, having seen too much, but the spirit still held my gaze. Then I pointed to the west and cried, what is that, and the spirit turned to look, and I fled the premises. Wait, you can’t leave now, cried the spirit, the Lamb just went back to get the next seven seals! But I had seen more than I wanted, and awoke from my dream with a start, and made coffee, and thought upon all these things.
